I regularly visit ebay to find a bargain or two. Of course, I also scan the cables for sale and see that there is an increasing number of well known branded cables being sold at incredibly low prices. Famous names like Nordost, Cardas and Siltech on auction starting at a very low price and ending up at a fraction of what you would expect to pay, even at secondhand used prices.
Are we looking at the genuine item? I think maybe not, because I cannot see the likes of Nordost selling full reels of their cables knowing that someone is going to grossly undermine their pricing structures. We can then safely assume they are copies or fakes, so are they EXACT copies of the real thing or just the outward appearance? Has anyone actually bought any of these far eastern sourced confections and been impressed with the performance?

Dream on if you think you are buying the real deal at that price. Surprised the original manufacturers haven't taken the chinese to task over copying.

It's all part of the Chinese master plan. Copy stuff, sell it cheap, put the OEM out of business, corner the market, raise prices, thank you very much Same has happened with amplifiers and DACs that were cheap a few years ago and now cost the same as their former competitors.

My chinese made cd player is on its second mains transformer because it is 220v rated not 240v rated. Took weeks to repair and a big bill for postage, so some bargain that turned out to be. Next time it's going on ebay or a skip

Next time it's going on ebay or a skip A common problem Jake with imports that have a 220 volt mains transformer fitted. To prevent your CD player popping it's cork yet again, do an internet search for a thing called a "BUCKING TRANSFORMER" which effectively is an add-on small transformer to raise it's input voltage to 240 volts. Here is a typical explanation of how it works: BUCKING TRANSFORMER

That goes right over my head I can see the logic of it, but I would be scared stiff messing about with mains electric. Let me get this straight could my local TV repair shop do the work or do I send it to a specialist hifi repairer? Any idea of cost?

Your local TV repair shop SHOULD be able to carry out the work. It is after all a very simple circuit to follow, but sourcing the transformer is a bit of a task. If you are unsure of their technical abilities then seek out a reputable hi-fi repairer.

Most TV repair shops these days are PCB swappers or send it back to the manufacturers
